Three Major Infrastructure Projects Changing How We Move Around Abington Township

Published: August 25, 2026 Category: Township Reading time: 3 min

If you have driven through Abington Township lately, you have probably noticed orange barrels, lane closures, and detour signs at more than a few intersections. That is because three major infrastructure projects are underway at the same time — a $17 million bridge replacement over SEPTA’s West Trenton Line, a $3.2 million bridge replacement over Pennypack Creek, and a $514,000 traffic safety upgrade at four key intersections.

Here is a breakdown of each project, what it means for your daily commute, and when you can expect completion.

Route 611 Bridge Over SEPTA Noble Station — $17 Million

The most visible project is the replacement of the Route 611 (Old York Road) bridge over SEPTA’s Noble Station. Built in 1905, the three-span bridge was in poor condition and had become a bottleneck for the roughly 20,000 vehicles that cross it daily. PennDOT began construction in June 2026.

The new bridge will carry five lanes of traffic with wider pedestrian walkways and ADA-compliant stairs and ramps at all four corners — a significant upgrade for the many residents who walk to Noble Station from the surrounding neighborhoods in Abington and Jenkintown.

During construction: Route 611 is reduced to a two-way, single-lane pattern with lane closures and restricted left turns at several intersections. Drivers should plan for delays, especially during peak hours.

Expected completion: PennDOT has not announced a firm date, but the project is part of a broader $4 billion investment in southeastern Pennsylvania roads and bridges announced by the Shapiro administration this year.

Why it matters for Rydal-Meadowbrook: Noble Station is a key commuter stop on the SEPTA West Trenton Line, serving residents from both Abington and Jenkintown. The improved pedestrian access will make it safer and easier to walk to the train.

Moredon Road Bridge Over Pennypack Creek — $3.2 Million

Just south of the neighborhood, Montgomery County’s replacement of Bridge No. 44 on Moredon Road over Pennypack Creek is nearing the finish line. The original contractor, Driscoll Construction of Blue Bell, began work in April 2025, but the project was delayed by PECO gas relocation work and is now expected to be complete by November 2026.

The new bridge is a two-span concrete structure with two 95-foot spans. A full detour has been in effect throughout construction, routing traffic around the closure near Lorimer Park.

Why it matters for Rydal-Meadowbrook: Moredon Road connects the southeastern edge of Abington Township to Lorimer Park and the Huntingdon Valley area. Once complete, the new bridge will restore a direct route for residents who have been navigating detours for over a year.

Traffic Safety Upgrades at Four Intersections — $514,000

In February 2026, Abington Township was awarded $514,633 through PennDOT’s Automated Red-Light Enforcement (ARLE) program for traffic safety improvements at these four intersections:

  1. Easton Road and Fairhill Avenue
  2. Easton Road and Parkdale Avenue
  3. Edge Hill Road and Keith Road
  4. Jenkintown Road and Evergreen Road

The funding will pay for high-visibility crosswalks, rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs), ADA-compliant curb ramps, and updated signage. These intersections were chosen because they serve schools, businesses, religious institutions, and recreational facilities.

Why it matters for Rydal-Meadowbrook: Several of these intersections are on major commuting routes in and out of the neighborhood. The high-visibility crosswalks and flashing beacons are especially important as the days grow shorter heading into fall — making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross at dusk and after dark.

What to Watch For

With three major projects in motion, Abington Township residents should expect construction-related delays through the rest of the year. The good news: all three projects deliver lasting improvements — safer bridges, better pedestrian access, and modern crosswalks that make walking and biking in the neighborhood more practical.

We continue to monitor these projects and communicate updates to residents. If you notice a safety concern or have questions about any of these projects, we encourage you to reach out.
