Back to School, the Close of Pool Season, and the Run-Up to Budget Season: Your September Township Calendar for Rydal-Meadowbrook

Published: September 1, 2026 Category: Township Reading time: 3 min

September in Abington Township is a pivot month. The school year starts, the last outdoor pools close for the season, and the township quietly begins the run-up to its next budget cycle. Here are the dates Rydal-Meadowbrook families should mark now.

Back to School: September 8 and 9

Abington School District opens the 2026-27 year with a staggered start. Grades K-6 and 9 return Tuesday, September 8, and grades 7-8 and 10-12 return Wednesday, September 9 — easing kindergarteners and ninth graders into new buildings without a chaotic full-campus opening day.

Monday, September 7 is Labor Day, so schools and township offices are closed, making the Tuesday start a gentle first day after the holiday weekend.

Last Days of Pool Season

Summer is wrapping up at the township’s outdoor pools:

After the holiday, Alverthorpe Park shifts to its fall operating hours — the neighborhood’s great outdoors are just changing phase, not closing. The township’s Fall & Winter Activities Guide for 2026-27 is already live on the Parks & Recreation page, so it is a good time to browse what is coming for the cooler months.

Board of Commissioners and Budget Season

The Board of Commissioners holds regular meetings, generally the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. In September that means Thursday, September 10 and Thursday, September 24, both at the Abington Township Municipal Building, 1176 Old York Road.

While the formal budget cycle typically kicks off around mid-October, September is when the agenda starts reflecting what is coming. Residents who want a say in how the township spends its money can begin listening in at these monthly meetings.
