Late-July Weekend Plans: A Concert Finale, a Market in Full Swing, and a Book Sale You Need to Hit

By the RMCA Board · 3 min read

If you think Rydal slows down once the Fourth of July passes, you have not been paying attention. The second half of July is when this neighborhood hits its stride — the concert series saves its best night for last, the farmers market is drowning in heirloom tomatoes, and the library just quietly dropped a book sale that will keep your nightstand full until fall. Here are three things worth putting on your calendar this week.

Consider this your neighborhood insider's shortlist. Each one is walkable or a short drive away, free or nearly free, and exactly the kind of thing that makes you glad you live here.

01 Abington Art Center Summer Concert — The Season Finale

This is it — the final free concert of the 2026 Abington Art Center Summer Concert Series. On Thursday, July 16, the rolling back lawn behind Alverthorpe Manor at 515 Meetinghouse Road, Jenkintown hosts WXPN Presents: Owen Stewart for a night that promises to be the biggest of the season.

Gates open at 5:30 PM, the opening act kicks off at 6:30 PM, and the headliner takes the lawn at 7:15 PM. Every Thursday this series has drawn a crowd, and the finale — sponsored by one of Philadelphia's most beloved music stations — is expected to pack the grounds. Food trucks, beer and wine vendors, and that unmistakable hum of a neighborhood gathered under the trees.

Bring a blanket, arrive early, and settle in. It is completely free, and this is the last chance to catch it until next June. If you have been meaning to go all summer and kept putting it off — this Thursday is the night.

02 Jenkintown Farmers Market — Peak Season, No Slowing Down

The Jenkintown Farmers Market runs every Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 PM in the parking lot of the Jenkintown Library at 460 York Road — practically on Rydal's doorstep. It has been running since late May, and right now it is deep into peak summer produce season.

This is the time of year when the tables are overflowing. Heirloom tomatoes still warm from the field. Peach crates that smell like August. Fresh-cut zinnias, sourdough loaves from Mockingbird Sourdough, pasture-raised meats from Herrcastle Farm, and handmade pastries that vanish by five o'clock. Vendors rotate weekly, so there is always something new to discover.

It is the kind of Thursday ritual that anchors your week — grab the kids after work, wander the stalls, run into three neighbors you know, and head home with a bag full of the best summer produce in Montgomery County. This is community in practice, and it is five minutes from your front door.

🎬 Vlog direction: Smooth interior pan across tables stacked with colorful books, warm light from tall windows, a pair of hands pulling a hardcover from a stack. Text overlay — "ABINGTON FREE LIBRARY — HALF PRICE BOOK SALE, JULY 13–18."

03 Abington Free Library — Half Price Book Sale This Week

The Abington Free Library — 1030 Old York Road, Abington — is running its Half Price Book Sale from July 13 through July 18 in the Book Cellar on the lower level. This is one of those neighborhood traditions that insiders know about and everyone else wishes they had discovered sooner.

Everything in the cellar is marked down to half price — fiction, non-fiction, children's books, cookbooks, mysteries, biographies, and more. The selection changes as people buy and volunteers restock, so early visits and return trips both pay off. It is the kind of place where you go in for one paperback and leave with a stack of six, all for under ten dollars.

The library is open during regular hours this week, and the Book Cellar is easy to find once you walk in. If you have kids heading into the school year, this is the cheapest way to stock up on reading material — and it supports the library at the same time. Consider this your nudge to stop by before Saturday.

Living here means never running out of things to do.

From a farewell concert under the oaks to a Thursday market run to a book sale that will keep you reading all summer — Rydal and the Abington corridor keep delivering reasons to stay close to home and love where you live.
