Think Rydal is just a quiet suburb? Here is what is happening this month — and it is going to surprise you. While the concert series wraps up and the tomatoes keep coming at the farmers market, there is a whole other layer of community life humming along in Abington Township that does not always make the newsletter. Library mornings with the kids, a bestselling author giving a talk in town, and news of the first-ever town-wide festival this fall. Here is what is on our radar.
The beauty of living in a neighborhood like Rydal-Meadowbrook is that the calendar never really goes quiet. You just have to know where to look.

01 Abington Free Library — Family Fun Days (Every Tuesday)
Every Tuesday at 10:00 AM, the Abington Free Library at 1030 Old York Road, Abington hosts Family Fun Day — a free morning of activities designed for kids ages three and up. It runs through the summer, with upcoming dates on July 21, July 28, August 4, and August 18.
Each session is different — you might walk into a craft station, a story circle, or a hands-on science activity. The library's children's wing is bright and welcoming, with a dedicated program room that fills up fast with neighborhood families. It is the kind of low-key, zero-pressure morning that toddlers and parents both look forward to.
No registration required. Just show up, let the kids explore, and if you are new to the area, it is one of the best ways to meet other families in the neighborhood. The library also runs Summer Reading through August 2 — kids of all ages can track their books and earn prizes. Stop by the front desk to pick up a reading log.
🎬 Vlog direction: Slow pan across a library program room with chairs arranged for an author talk, a podium with microphone at the front, warm light through tall windows. Quick cut to a close-up of a book cover on a display table. Text overlay — "JULY 28 — DR. MARISA FRANCO AT THE LIBRARY."
02 "The Power of Connection" — A Free Author Talk with Dr. Marisa Franco
On Tuesday, July 28, at 2:00 PM, the Abington Free Library is hosting a virtual author talk with Dr. Marisa Franco, psychologist and bestselling author of Platonic: How the Science of Attachment Can Help You Make — and Keep — Friends. The talk is titled "The Power of Connection" and it is completely free.
In a time when community connection matters more than ever — and when a neighborhood like Rydal-Meadowbrook is built on exactly those bonds — this conversation feels especially relevant. Dr. Franco's research focuses on how adults form and sustain meaningful friendships, and her talk promises to be practical, warm, and backed by real science.
The library streams these events through the Library Speakers Consortium, and you can register online through the library's events page. It is a perfect mid-week afternoon pause — grab a cup of coffee, tune in from home, and come away with a fresh perspective on the relationships that make a neighborhood a community.

03 Abington Fest — The First Annual Town-Wide Celebration
Mark your calendar for October 4–5, 2026 — Abington Township is launching its first-ever Abington Fest, a weekend-long community celebration spread across two parks. This is the kind of event that neighborhoods dream about: a 5K run, a kids' dash, a full fall festival with bounce houses and live music, and a parent-child golf tournament at Alverthorpe Park.
Saturday, October 4 kicks off early with a Kids' Dash at 8:00 AM at Roslyn Park (free for children under 10), followed by the Abington Fest 5K Run/Walk at 8:30 AM — $30 for adults, $20 for ages 5–17, with a T-shirt and prizes for top finishers. Then from 12:00 to 3:00 PM, the action moves to Crestmont Park (2595 Rubicam Avenue) for the Fall Festival: Touch a Truck, Trunk or Treat, bounce houses, crafts, live music, and food trucks. Free admission.
Sunday, October 5 wraps the weekend with a Parent-Child Golf Tournament at Alverthorpe Park at 10:00 AM for ages 7–12 with a guardian. Registration opens August 4. This is a milestone moment for the township — the first time Abington has organized a weekend festival on this scale. It is going to be big, and it is going to be worth every minute.
Living here means never running out of things to do.
From Tuesday mornings at the library to a bestselling author's talk to a historic first festival that promises to define the fall season — Rydal and the greater Abington area keep delivering reasons to put down roots and stay.
