Saturday Mornings, Friday Nights, and a Gallery Opening: Your Late-July to Mid-August Guide for Rydal

By the RMCA Board · 3 min read

Think Rydal is just a quiet suburb once the concert series ends? Actually, the last week of July and the first half of August stack up better than you might expect. A Saturday morning market that keeps getting better, a free Friday-night hangout for teens and tweens, and an art opening that celebrates the next generation of local talent. Here is your neighborhood shortlist for the next three weeks.

The stretch between late July and mid-August has its own rhythm. The sun stays high, the evenings stretch long, and the community calendar shifts from big-ticket festivals to the kind of low-key, reliable weekly events that make summer in the Abington area feel like it was designed for families. Whether you have lived here your whole life or you are scouting the neighborhood, these are the moments that sell themselves.

🎬 Vlog direction: Hand-held tracking shot walking into the Glenside train station parking lot on a bright Saturday morning. White canopy tents come into view one at a time, early sunlight rakes across tables piled high with heirloom tomatoes and sunflowers. Close-up on a vendor handing a customer a paper bag of peaches. 01 Glenside Farmers Market, Peak Season, Every Saturday

White farmers market tents with fresh summer produce set up in a parking lot on a bright Saturday morning, tree-lined street nearby

Every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the Glenside Regional Rail Station parking lot at 49 West Glenside Avenue transforms into one of the best farmers markets in Montgomery County. It runs through late November, but right now in late July it is at its absolute peak.

The vendor lineup is deep and local. Herr Castle Farms brings pasture-raised meats and eggs. Lone Wolf Farm Market delivers whatever came out of the ground that morning. Heck of a Cookie and For The People Bread handle the carb department. And yes, the sourdough sells out early. You will also find local honey from Spring Honey Bees, olive oils from Olive Lucy, and rotating seasonal vendors who pop up with everything from cut flowers to fresh pasta.

The setting is part of the draw: the historic stone train station with the SEPTA West Trenton Line running past, neighbors catching up over coffee while their kids eye the pastry table, the whole scene unfolding under mature shade trees. It is a genuine Saturday-morning ritual, barely a five-minute drive from Rydal. Bring a reusable bag and get there before 10:00 for the best picks.

🎬 Vlog direction: Wide establishing shot of the Abington PAL building on Woodland Road at dusk, warm light spilling from the gym doors, teens walking in carrying backpacks. Cut to interior hand-held shots: a foosball table in action, kids at the air hockey table, a Rock Band session with mock-serious guitar solos. Golden-hour exterior, then warm indoor lighting. Text overlay: "ABINGTON PAL, FREE FRIDAY NIGHTS FOR TEENS. AUGUST 14."

02 Abington PAL Summer Event, Free Friday Night for Youth

A summer evening outdoor concert at a suburban park amphitheater, families sitting on blankets and lawn chairs on a grassy hillside watching a band perform on stage during golden hour

On Friday, August 14, from 7:00 to 10:00 PM, the Abington Police Athletic League (PAL) is hosting its weekly summer event at the PAL Gym on the Woodland Road Campus at 2741 Woodland Road, Abington. It is completely free for youth ages 10 through senior year of high school who live in or attend a public, private, or parochial school in Abington Township.

What does a PAL Friday night look like? Think Rock Band tournaments on the big screen, pool tables, ping-pong, air hockey, arcade basketball, and foosball. The kind of rec-center energy that feels like summer break distilled into a few hours. PAL also takes a group bowling on Friday nights (separate sign-up, typically at the Brunswick Zone in Glenside), so there are options for every kind of evening.

PAL membership is free and open to eligible youth. It is one of those programs that quietly anchors the community. Police officers and kids interacting in a positive, low-pressure setting, building trust and giving families a safe, supervised place for their teens to hang out on a summer night. For parents scouting the Abington area, it is exactly the kind of program that stands out.

For more info, call PAL at 267-536-1100 x1235 or stop by the gym on a Friday night to see it in action.

🎬 Vlog direction: Slow tracking shot through the historic rooms of Abington Art Center's Alverthorpe Manor, past colorful children's artwork hung on gallery walls at child height, a reception crowd mingling with cups in hand, parents photographing their kids standing next to their pieces. Warm evening light through the tall windows, crown molding and fireplaces in frame. Text overlay: "KIDFEST, THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 5-8 PM."

03 Kidfest at Abington Art Center, Young Artist Exhibition Opening

A bright, airy artist studio with sunlight streaming through large windows, easels and canvases arranged around the room, colorful paint palettes on a wooden table

Mark your calendar for Thursday, August 20, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM for the Kidfest Young Artist Exhibition Reception at the Abington Art Center, 515 Meetinghouse Road in Jenkintown. This free, family-friendly opening showcases artwork created by summer camp participants ages 4 through 16, and it is one of the most heartfelt events on the local calendar.

The Art Center runs a full slate of summer art camps throughout June, July, and August. Morning sessions for ages 4-12, mixed-media exploration, painting, ceramics, and even a dedicated teen studio program. Kidfest is the grand finale: every camper gets a piece of their work hung in the gallery, and the reception is a chance for families, friends, and the community to walk through the historic Alverthorpe Manor and see what the kids have been creating all summer.

The setting alone is worth the trip. The Art Center is housed in a 1920s Tudor Revival estate set on nine acres of manicured gardens and lawns. The gallery spaces occupy the manor's original rooms with fireplaces, crown molding, and tall windows flooding the artwork with natural light. Seeing children's art displayed in a space that usually hosts professional exhibitions sends a quiet message about the value the community places on creativity.

Admission is free. The exhibition remains on view after the reception, so if you cannot make the opening, stop by during regular gallery hours in the following days. It is a wonderful way to see the next generation of Abington artists finding their voice. A good reminder that summer in Rydal is about more than just the warm weather.

Living here means never running out of things to do.

From a Saturday morning at the market while the peaches are still warm from the sun, to a Friday night with the teens at PAL, to an art opening where the artists are barely tall enough to reach the gallery walls. This is what summer in Rydal and Abington Township looks like. The calendar keeps turning, and the community keeps showing up. All you have to do is come out and join them.
