Mini Golf, Market Saturdays, and a Library Trivia Night: Your Late-July Weekend Guide for Rydal

By the RMCA Board · 3 min read

Think Rydal is just a quiet suburb where the weekdays blur into each other? Here is what is happening this weekend and into early August. Mini golf at a park that feels like a hidden gem, a farmers market that has hit peak season, and a library trivia night that the whole family can get in on. Three reasons to put the phone down and get outside.

Late July in Abington Township has a specific feel. The summer concert series at the Art Center has wrapped, but the calendar does not go quiet. Instead, the rhythm shifts to the kind of unhurried, community-driven events that define summer in a neighborhood like Rydal. The parks are green, the evenings are long, and there is always something to do within a five-minute drive. Whether you have lived here ten years or you are just looking at the area, this is the week to discover what makes this corner of Montgomery County tick.

🎬 Vlog direction: Hand-held tracking shot from the parking lot of Alverthorpe Park on a bright Saturday morning, following the path past the rental shack toward the mini golf course. Colorful windmill obstacles appear one by one, kids laughing and swinging putters, parents following with iced coffee in hand. Sunlight dappled through the trees, the lake glinting in the background. 01 Mini Golf at Alverthorpe Park, Open Daily Through Labor Day

Alverthorpe Park in Jenkintown PA on a bright summer afternoon, featuring a lush green lawn, a miniature golf course with colorful windmill obstacles, and families enjoying the park under mature trees

Alverthorpe Park at 640 Meetinghouse Road, Jenkintown, is in its full summer stride right now. The 18-hole miniature golf course is open daily from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM through September 1, and it is about as classic a suburban summer activity as you can find. The course winds through shade trees and around the lake, with a few obstacles that keep the kids engaged and the adults competitive.

While you are there, the park also has tennis courts, reservable picnic tables at $8 each, and fishing in Alverthorpe Lake for anyone with a seasonal fishing tag from the township. The park is open to Abington Township residents and their guests. It is a five-minute drive from Rydal, and on a late-July afternoon, it is exactly the kind of place that makes you feel like summer has a long way to go.

For park information, call the control building at 215-884-6538. For the mini golf, just show up. Clubs and balls are provided at the rental shack.

🎬 Vlog direction: Wide establishing shot of the Glenside train station parking lot, white canopy tents filling the space on a Saturday morning. Hand-held walk-through past tables piled with heirloom tomatoes, sunflowers, and fresh bread. A vendor offers a sample of honey. Close-up on a woman choosing peaches. Golden morning light, leaves rustling, the low rumble of a SEPTA train in the background. Text overlay: "GLENSIDE FARMERS MARKET, SATURDAYS 9 AM – 1 PM."

02 Glenside Farmers Market, Peak Summer Produce Every Saturday

White farmers market tents with fresh summer produce set up in a parking lot on a bright Saturday morning, tree-lined street nearby

Every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the Glenside Farmers Market takes over the parking lot of the Glenside Regional Rail Station at 1 West Glenside Avenue. It runs from late April through late November, but late July is when it peaks. The summer produce is at its most generous: sweet corn, peaches, heirloom tomatoes, zucchini, and cut flowers that look like they belong in a magazine.

The vendor lineup is a reliable mix of local farms and artisan producers. Herr Castle Farms brings pasture-raised meats, Lone Wolf Farm Market supplies whatever came out of the ground that morning, and Heck of a Cookie and For The People Bread sell out of baked goods early. You will also find local honey, olive oils, fresh pasta, and a rotating cast of seasonal vendors who pop up with whatever is ripe.

The setting matters here. The market sits in the shadow of the historic stone Glenside train station, with the SEPTA West Trenton Line running past. Neighbors run into each other, kids eye the pastry table, and the whole scene unfolds under a canopy of mature shade trees. It is a genuine Saturday-morning ritual for the Rydal-Meadowbrook area, and one of the best arguments for a walkable, connected community.

Bring a reusable bag and get there before 10:00 AM for the best selection. The sourdough goes fast.

🎬 Vlog direction: Evening interior at the Abington Free Library, warm lighting over the reading room, families gathered around tables with trivia sheets, a librarian at the podium with a microphone. Pan across the historic stone building exterior at dusk, golden light through the tall windows. Hand-held shot of a kid whispering an answer to their parent. 03 Family Trivia Night at Abington Free Library, Wednesday July 29

The historic Abington Free Library building on Old York Road in Abington Township, a stone structure with large windows and mature trees, warm summer evening light

On Wednesday, July 29, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, the Abington Free Library at 1030 Old York Road, Abington is hosting a Family Trivia Night for all ages. It is a drop-in event, no registration required, and it is exactly the kind of low-stakes, high-fun midweek activity that families in the neighborhood have been asking for.

Beyond trivia night, the library has a packed summer schedule. The Summer Reading Challenge runs through August for all ages at both the Abington and Roslyn branches. Abington READS!, a program for children entering grades 1 through 3, meets on Thursdays July 31, August 7, and August 14 in two sessions (6:00 PM and 7:00 PM), with registration opening July 17. And Library Pop-Ups in the Park bring kid activities and free snacks to local parks on Wednesdays throughout July.

The library building itself is worth noting. The historic stone structure on Old York Road has been a fixture in Abington for decades, with a modern children's wing, a quiet reading room, and a staff that genuinely seems to enjoy what they do. For families scouting the area, the library is a reliable indicator of community investment. And Abington Free Library delivers on that front.

For the full schedule of summer events, visit the library's website at abingtonfreelibrary.org or sign up for their bi-weekly email newsletter. The summer reading program alone is worth the trip.

Living here means never running out of things to do.

A Saturday morning at the market with peaches still warm from the sun. An afternoon putting through the windmills at Alverthorpe Park. A Wednesday evening testing your family's trivia knowledge under the lights of the historic library. Late July in Rydal and Abington Township is not about slowing down. It is about slowing into the right kind of summer. The kind where the community shows up, and all you have to do is walk out the door.
