Kidfest, Market Saturdays, and Mini Golf Under the Trees: The Best of Late Summer in Rydal

By the RMCA Board · 3 min read

Think Rydal quiets down after the Fourth of July? Here is what is happening this week and into mid-August. A gallery opening that turns the art center into a family celebration, a farmers market that is hitting its peak with peaches and sweet corn, and a miniature golf course that feels like summer itself. Three reasons to keep your calendar full.

Late July in Abington Township has a rhythm all its own. The big concert series wrap up, the sun stays out past 8:00 PM, and the community calendar fills with the kind of unhurried, family-friendly events that make this corner of Montgomery County feel like a small town inside a big metro. The train can get you to Center City in under 40 minutes, but on a Saturday morning with the market in full swing or a Thursday evening watching kids discover art, you might not want to leave. Whether you have lived in Rydal for years or you are just starting to look at the area, this late-summer stretch is the best introduction to what the neighborhood is really about.

01 Glenside Farmers Market, Peak Summer Produce Every Saturday

White farmers market tents with fresh summer produce set up in a parking lot on a bright Saturday morning, tree-lined street nearby

Every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the Glenside Farmers Market sets up in the parking lot of the Glenside Regional Rail Station at 1 West Glenside Avenue. The season runs from late April through late November, but the late-July and August weeks are when the market is at its most generous. Sweet corn, heirloom tomatoes, peaches, zucchini, sunflowers, and herbs that smell like a garden in a bunch.

The vendor lineup is a dependable mix of local farms and artisan producers. Herr Castle Farms brings pasture-raised meats and eggs. Lone Wolf Farm Market supplies whatever came out of the ground that morning. Canned Fresh by Lois stocks preserves and pickled vegetables. Heck of a Cookie and The Table Loaf sell out of baked goods by 10:30 AM if you do not get there early. You will also find local honey from Spring Honey Bees, handcrafted soaps, and alpaca yarn from a vendor who brings the softest things at the market.

What makes this market special is the setting. The historic stone Glenside station anchors the lot, the SEPTA West Trenton Line runs a few feet away, and the whole scene takes place under a canopy of mature trees. Neighbors run into each other. Kids eye the cookie table. Dogs are welcome. It is a genuine Saturday-morning ritual that has been growing every year, and it is a five-minute drive from Rydal.

Bring a reusable bag and cash (some vendors take cards, but not all). The sourdough and the peaches go fast.

02 Alverthorpe Park Mini Golf & Wading Pool, Open Daily Through Labor Day

Alverthorpe Park at 640 Meetinghouse Road, Jenkintown, is the neighborhood's backyard, and right now it is in full summer mode. The 18-hole miniature golf course is open daily from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM through September 7 (Labor Day). It is a classic course, winding around the lake and under shade trees, with a few obstacles that keep the kids engaged and the adults competitive. Clubs and balls are provided at the rental shack. No reservations needed. Just show up.

For families with younger children, the park's wading pool is open daily through Labor Day as well. It is designed for children five and under, and it is a favorite among local parents. The park also has tennis courts, reservable picnic tables at $8 each, and fishing in Alverthorpe Lake for anyone with a seasonal Abington Township fishing tag. The whole park is open to township residents and their guests, and the control building can be reached at 215-884-6538 for any questions.

What makes Alverthorpe Park special is how it anchors the community. The park reopened May 22 after storm cleanup, and it has been buzzing ever since. On a late-July afternoon, the mini golf course is full of families, the lake is catching the light, and the trees cast long shadows across the lawn. It is a five-minute drive from Rydal, and it is exactly the kind of municipal asset that makes a neighborhood feel like home.

The park is free for Abington Township residents. Bring sunscreen, bring water, and plan to stay a while.

On Thursday, August 20, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, the Abington Art Center at 515 Meetinghouse Road, Jenkintown, is hosting the Kidfest Exhibition Opening & Art Making Extravaganza. This is the showcase for everything the summer camp kids created between June 22 and August 14, and it is one of the best community events on the calendar, especially for families with children ages 4 through 12.

The exhibition features work from the Art Center's morning camps, which cover painting, sculpture, jewelry, acting, and mixed media. Kids who spent their summer learning to throw clay on a wheel or stage a short play get to see their work on real gallery walls. Parents get to see what their children have been so excited about all summer. And the whole thing takes place on the grounds of Alverthorpe Manor, a historic estate with a sprawling lawn, old trees, and a view that makes you forget you are a block from the train station.

The Art Center also runs Summer Camps through August 28 for ages 4 to 12, with morning sessions covering everything from painting and sculpture to acting and jewelry-making. Gallery exhibitions throughout the summer include the 2026 Annual Juried Show: Black & White and Revolutionary Women, both worth a visit on their own.

For families considering a move to the area, the Abington Art Center is a strong signal of what this community values. It is a working art center, not just a gallery. Kids take classes here. Adults take workshops. The grounds are open to walk. The concert series draws hundreds of neighbors on Thursday nights. On August 20, it will be full of families celebrating a summer of creativity, and you are invited.

For the full schedule of summer camps and exhibitions, visit abingtonartcenter.org/events. Kidfest is free and open to the public. Parking is available on-site.

Living here means never running out of things to do.

A Saturday morning at the market with peaches still warm from the sun. An afternoon at the park putting through the windmills, the lake catching the light. A Thursday evening at the art center watching your child's face light up at their own work on the wall. Late summer in Rydal and Abington Township is not about squeezing in the last few weekends before the leaves turn. It is about realizing that the best parts of the neighborhood are here all year, and they are better when you share them.
