Think August in Rydal is all quiet sidewalks and cicadas? Not this year. This August, the neighborhood is stacked. A bestselling mystery writer joins the Abington Free Library lineup, the Keswick Theatre marquee is lit up every weekend, and Abington Township is celebrating America's 250th birthday all season long. Three reasons to keep your calendar full through the hottest month of the year.
August has a reputation as the sleepy month of summer. The big concert series are wrapping up. The camp schedules are tapering. But in Rydal and the surrounding Abington corridor, August is when the calendar gets interesting. The library brings in authors you have actually heard of. The historic theatre in Glenside rolls out a lineup that runs the gamut from folk to funk. And the township is in the middle of a yearlong patriotic celebration that touches every corner of the community. If you are new to the area, or just looking for reasons to stay in town instead of fighting shore traffic, this is your month.
🎬 Vlog direction: Hand-held walk up the stone steps of the Abington Free Library on a bright late-summer morning, the historic facade glowing in the sun. Cut to interior: tall windows, shelves of books, a flyer board advertising August events. A librarian smiles and points to the events calendar. Warm, natural daylight streaming through the windows. Text overlay: "ABINGTON FREE LIBRARY — AUGUST EVENTS. FREE AND OPEN TO ALL."
01 Abington Free Library: Gel Printing, Botanical Talks, and a Bestselling Mystery Author
The Abington Free Library at 1030 Old York Road, Abington, has stacked its August calendar with three standout events that cover every age group and interest.
On Monday, August 3, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM, kids ages 10 to 18 can roll up their sleeves for Create Gel Prints. The library provides the gel plates, paints, and paper; teens and tweens bring their creativity. It is a free, hands-on workshop where young artists experiment with color, texture, and pattern. No registration is required, and the results are the kind of thing parents end up framing.
On Tuesday, August 25, at 2:00 PM, award-winning plant biologist Beronda Montgomery presents "When Trees Testify: Reclaiming America's Black Botanical Legacy." Montgomery is the author of Lessons from Plants and a leading voice at the intersection of botany, ecology, and social justice. Her talk reexamines how Black communities have shaped and been shaped by the natural world. It is part of the library's ongoing series of virtual author talks, and it is free to attend online.
Two days later, on Thursday, August 27, at 2:00 PM, Lucy Foley joins the library's virtual stage. Foley is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Guest List, The Hunting Party, and The Midnight Feast. Her talk is titled "High Altitudes and High Stakes: A Miss Marple Mystery" and she will discuss her craft, her inspirations, and the art of the modern whodunnit. If you have ever stayed up past midnight finishing one of her books, this is your chance to hear from the author herself.
All three events are free and open to the public. For the full August calendar, including the ongoing Summer Reading Challenge for all ages, visit abingtonfreelibrary.org or stop by the front desk. The library is a five-minute drive from Rydal, and it is one of the neighborhood's strongest community anchors.
🎬 Vlog direction: Night shot of the Keswick Theatre marquee glowing against a deep blue summer sky, the show lineup scrolling in warm amber light. Hand-held pullback reveals couples and friends walking up the brick sidewalk toward the doors. A ticket booth, the buzz of conversation, the neon glow reflected on the street after a summer rain. Text overlay: "KESWICK THEATRE, GLENSIDE. SHOWS ALL AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER."
02 Keswick Theatre: A Stacked Summer Lineup in Glenside, Minutes from Rydal
The Keswick Theatre at 291 N. Keswick Avenue, Glenside, is one of the Philadelphia region's most beloved historic venues. Built in 1928, it has hosted everyone from Duke Ellington to David Bowie, and this August and September the lineup is as strong as ever. Best part: it is less than ten minutes from Rydal.
August 1 brings Amy Grant, the six-time Grammy winner whose catalog spans decades of Christian pop and mainstream hits. It is a rare intimate evening with an artist who has sold over 30 million records worldwide. The next night, August 2, blues legend Buddy Guy takes the stage. At 90 years old, this is a living-legend show not to miss. Two legends in one weekend, two blocks from the Glenside train station.
On August 4, ABBA The Concert brings the Swedish supergroup's greatest hits to life with a full tribute production. August 21 is Yellow Brick Joel a high-energy double tribute to Elton John and Billy Joel. August 22 features Mat Kearney, the folk-pop singer-songwriter whose anthemic songs have soundtracked road trips and coming-of-age moments for a generation.
And September keeps the momentum going. September 8 brings blues-rock guitar virtuoso Gary Clark Jr. September 10 offers Beatles vs. Stones: A Musical Showdown, a crowd-pleasing tribute battle. September 25 features Jim Henson's Labyrinth: In Concert, the beloved 1986 film projected in full with the score performed live by an orchestra. And on September 27, reggae icons UB40 close out the month.
Tickets are available at keswicktheatre.com. Parking is free in the lot behind the theatre, and the Jenkintown-Wyncote and Glenside SEPTA stations are both a short walk away. Grab dinner at one of the Glenside restaurants before the show, and you have a full night out without leaving the neighborhood.
🎬 Vlog direction: Drone shot pulling back over tree-lined suburban streets in Abington Township, a banner reading "America 250" hanging from a historic stone municipal building. Cut to handheld footage of a community gathering on the lawn: a small band under a gazebo, families on picnic blankets, a face-painting station, kids running with small flags in hand. Late afternoon golden-hour light, warm and nostalgic. Text overlay: "ABINGTON TOWNSHIP. AMERICA 250. CELEBRATING ALL YEAR."
03 America 250: Abington Township Celebrates the Nation's Semiquincentennial All Summer Long
Throughout 2026, Abington Township is marking the nation's 250th anniversary with a yearlong series of events, programs, and community celebrations. And the best part is that the programming is still rolling through August and into the fall.
The township's America 250 page at abingtonpa.gov/677/America-250 lists a full calendar of activities that honor the area's history, its diverse communities, and the shared spirit that makes Abington Township such a strong place to live. Past events this year have included community picnics, historical walking tours, and collaborative programs with local libraries and civic organizations. More events are being added as the year progresses.
For Rydal-Meadowbrook residents, the America 250 celebration is a reminder that this neighborhood has been part of the national story since long before it was a suburb. The area was originally part of the Welsh Tract, settled in the late 1600s. Rydal station has been a stop on the North Pennsylvania Railroad since the 1850s. The Meadowbrook Bird Sanctuary was once part of a larger estate. The America 250 events are a chance to explore that history alongside your neighbors, and to introduce your kids to the idea that the past is not something in a textbook. It is the ground under their feet.
Check the township's website regularly for updates on August and September programming. Some America 250 events coincide with existing community gatherings, including the Abington Farmers Market and outdoor concerts at township parks. Follow Abington Township on social media or sign up for their e-newsletter to stay in the loop.
And if you have an idea for a neighborhood-level America 250 event, reach out to the township. The whole point of the celebration is that it comes from the community.
Living here means never running out of things to do.
An author talk at the library on a Tuesday afternoon. A living legend at the Keswick on a Saturday night. A community celebration of 250 years of American history on a Township Green in between. August in Rydal and Abington Township is not the end of summer. It is the part of summer you will remember all year.
