A $50 Million Vision for the Abington Free Library: What the New Building Means for Rydal-Meadowbrook

By the RMCA Board · 4 min read

The Abington Free Library has been a fixture on Old York Road for 72 years. Generations of Rydal-Meadowbrook families have walked through its doors for story time, homework help, summer reading challenges, and the quiet pleasure of browsing a good collection. Now the township is planning something it has not done in seven decades: build a new one.

In April 2026, the Pennsylvania Department of Education awarded Abington Township a $749,750 Keystone Grant to fund the planning and design phase of a $50 million replacement library at the same site at 1030 Old York Road. The grant was part of a statewide $11 million round of library facility investments announced by the Shapiro administration, and Abington's award was the largest in the region (source: Pennsylvania Department of Education / Montco Today).

For Rydal-Meadowbrook residents, this is more than a building project. The library is the neighborhood's closest major public facility, a five-minute drive from most homes, and a resource that serves everyone from toddlers at lap-sit story time to seniors attending lifelong learning programs. The current building, originally constructed in the mid-1950s, has served the community well but now faces significant infrastructure challenges. Outdated mechanical systems, limited accessibility, and inflexible spaces that cannot accommodate the way a 21st-century library needs to operate.

01 What the New Library Will Include

While the final design will be shaped by community input, the vision outlined by township officials and library director Elizabeth Fitzgerald points to a modern, sustainable, fully accessible facility built to serve Abington for another half century (source: The Philadelphia Inquirer, June 2026).

Key elements under consideration include expanded technology access with public computer labs and high-speed connectivity, flexible meeting spaces that can be configured for everything from community group gatherings to after-school programs, dedicated children's and teen zones with age-appropriate resources and programming space, improved accessibility throughout the building, and sustainable design features that will reduce long-term operating costs. The new library is also envisioned as a potential anchor for a broader mixed-use redevelopment of the surrounding area along Old York Road, aligning with the township's long-range planning goals.

02 The Community's Library: How to Weigh In

One phrase from library director Elizabeth Fitzgerald has stuck with us: "This is the community's library." And the planning process is designed to reflect that. The grant funding will support a robust community engagement phase that includes surveys, focus groups, town halls, and one-on-one conversations with residents and stakeholders (source: Montco Today / Glenside Local).

This is where Rydal-Meadowbrook residents can make a difference. If you have ever wished the library had longer hours, a quiet reading room with better natural light, more programs for teens, a larger parking lot, or any other improvement, now is the time to say so. The planning phase is the point where your voice has the most impact, before designs are drawn and contracts are signed.

As for timing: demolition of the existing building is not expected before September 2027, with construction procurement and build-out projected for 2028 or later. There is time to get this right, and the RMCA will be following every step of the process.

03 Tonight: Pre-Night Out Block Party

Before we look too far ahead, a quick note about tonight. Monday, August 3 from 5:00 PM onward, the Abington Township Pre-Night Out Block Party is happening at the Abington Towne Center (1495 Old York Road, in the Target parking lot). Hosted by Citizens and Police Together, the event features food, kids' games, information booths, and displays from local police and emergency services. It is a great chance to meet neighbors, connect with township officials, and kick off National Night Out week with a community spirit that embodies what RMCA is all about (source: Abington Act / Zeffy ticketing).

A library for the next generation starts with your voice today.

The $50 million Abington Free Library project is the kind of once-in-a-generation investment that shapes a community for decades. But the best buildings are only as good as the people who use them. When the survey goes live, when the town hall is scheduled, when the focus group meets, show up. Bring your ideas. Bring your kids. Tell them what a library meant to you when you were their age. And tell the planning team what you want it to mean for them.

The RMCA will be there. We hope you will be too.
