Back-to-School in Rydal, a Township Meeting This Thursday, and New E-Bike Rules on the Horizon

By the RMCA Board · 3 min read

August in Rydal-Meadowbrook is that sweet stretch where summer still feels wide open, but the calendar starts nudging you toward fall. The school district has locked in its start dates for the 2026-2027 year. The Board of Commissioners meets this Thursday with items that affect the neighborhood. And a proposed e-bike ordinance headed for a public hearing could change how families use local parks. Here is what is on the horizon and how you can stay in the loop.

Whether you are wrangling school supply lists or just want to know what the township is working on, this is the week to pay attention. We have gathered the key dates and details so you do not have to hunt for them.

01 Abington Schools: Mark Your Calendar for September 8

The Abington School District has finalized the 2026-2027 academic calendar, and the first day of classes is now set. Students in grades K-6 and 9 will start Tuesday, September 8, while students in grades 7-8 and 10-12 begin Wednesday, September 9. The staggered start gives families an extra day to transition between the elementary and secondary schedules.

Before the first bell rings, the district has scheduled Teacher Inservice Days on August 31 and September 1-4, so buildings will be active but classrooms will be empty. Labor Day falls on September 7, giving families a full long weekend before the school year kicks off.

For families with children entering kindergarten, registration remains open through the district website at AbingtonSD.org/KRegistration. The district recommends registering as early as possible to secure a spot at your neighborhood elementary school. If you live in the Rydal-Meadowbrook area, your elementary school is typically Rydal Elementary School (2200 Tomlinson Road), though boundary questions should be directed to the district office.

The full district calendar is available at abingtonsd.org/page/district-calendars. Bookmark it now, and you will never wonder whether there is school on a random Tuesday in January.

02 Board of Commissioners: Regular Meeting This Thursday

The Abington Township Board of Commissioners holds its regular monthly meeting this Thursday, August 13, at 7:00 PM at the Abington Township Municipal Building (1176 Old York Road). These meetings are where zoning decisions, budget items, public works projects, and community development proposals get their public airing.

While the full agenda for Thursday's meeting had not been published at press time, the August calendar also includes a Shade Tree Commission meeting on Tuesday, August 11, at 7:30 PM and a Fire Board meeting on Monday, August 17. Residents can attend any of these meetings in person, and most are also accessible via Zoom. The township posts agendas and Zoom links at abingtonpa.gov typically 48 hours before each meeting.

For Rydal-Meadowbrook residents, the Board of Commissioners meetings are one of the most direct ways to raise neighborhood-specific concerns or hear about developments that affect the area. The current board includes representatives from each ward, and our neighborhood falls under the township's broader service area. If you have a question about a specific issue — trash pickup, road conditions, stormwater management — the public comment portion of the meeting is your opportunity to speak directly to the people who make the decisions.

Can not make it in person? Recordings of the meetings are typically posted to the township website within a few days. You can also reach your commissioner by email through the township website directory.

03 Proposed E-Bike Ordinance: Public Hearing Set for August 27

One of the more consequential local policy items this summer is a proposed ordinance to regulate e-bikes and e-scooters on Abington Township-owned property. The Board of Commissioners has scheduled a public hearing for Thursday, August 27 on Ordinance No. 2244, which would amend Chapter 158 of the township code (Vehicles, Recreational Vehicles).

As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer on July 10, the proposed ordinance would ban e-bikes and e-scooters from Abington-owned parks and trails, citing safety concerns. The ban would not apply to electrified mobility devices designed for people with disabilities, nor to county-owned sites like Lorimer Park. The ordinance defines an e-bike as a pedal cycle weighing no more than 100 pounds, with operable pedals, powered by an electric motor of 750 watts or less, and capable of a maximum motor-powered speed of 20 mph on level ground.

For Rydal-Meadowbrook residents, this could affect how families travel to and through Alverthorpe Park, Jackson Park, and other township-maintained green spaces where e-bikes are currently permitted. The proposal does not affect riding on streets or sidewalks, only on township park and trail property.

The public hearing gives residents a chance to speak for or against the ordinance before the board votes. The hearing is scheduled for the August 27 Board of Commissioners meeting at 7:00 PM at the municipal building. You can review the full text of Ordinance No. 2244 on the township website at abingtonpa.gov/DocumentCenter. If you use e-bikes to get your kids to the park, or if you have safety concerns about sharing trails with motorized wheels, this is the meeting to attend.

Three things to put on your calendar this month.

School start dates, a Board of Commissioners meeting, and a public hearing on e-bike rules. These are the kinds of items that shape daily life in Rydal-Meadowbrook, and the RMCA is here to make sure you know about them before they happen.

Stay informed. Stay involved. The more residents know about what the township and the school district are doing, the stronger our community becomes.
