Local Authors, Bargain Books, and a Reggae Night at the Keswick: Three Reasons This September Weekend Belongs on Your Calendar

By Craig Lerch · 3 min read

Think Rydal is just a quiet suburb where nothing happens? Here is what the last weekend of September looks like. The Abington Free Library is packing two full days of literary events into one weekend, with a Local Author Expo and book fair on Saturday and the Friends Fall Book and Plant Sale on Sunday. And if you still have energy after all that reading, the Keswick Theatre has UB40 live on Sunday night — the perfect way to close out a weekend that proves Rydal and Abington Township are anything but sleepy.

Whether you are a lifelong book lover, a weekend gardener looking for a deal on houseplants, or someone who just wants to hear Red Red Wine and Kingston Town performed by the original band, this weekend has something with your name on it. And the best part is that every single event is within a ten-minute drive of Rydal.

🎬 Vlog direction: Hand-held walking shot through the Abington Free Library on a quiet morning, shelves of books in natural light streaming through tall windows, a flyer pinned to the bulletin board announcing the Local Author Expo with a stack of flyers below it, patrons leafing through new arrivals, warm late-summer light casting long rectangles across the floor. 01 Local Author Expo & All Ages Book Fair — Saturday at the Library

A library community room set up for a local author fair, with tables displaying books and a craft corner, warm natural light through large windows

On Saturday, September 26, from 12:00 to 4:00 PM, the Abington Free Library at 1030 Old York Road in Abington transforms its community room into a full-scale literary marketplace. The Local Author Expo & All Ages Book Fair brings together writers from across Montgomery County, giving readers of every age a chance to meet the people behind the pages.

This is not your standard library book sale where you dig through dusty boxes of 1980s romance novels. The Author Expo features a curated lineup of local writers spanning every genre you can think of — mystery, memoir, children's picture books, historical fiction, poetry, and nonfiction about everything from Philadelphia history to suburban gardening. Each author gets a table, and most are happy to chat, sign copies, and talk about what inspired their work. If you have ever walked out of a bookstore wishing you could ask the author a question, this is your chance.

For families, there is a craft corner set up for kids, so you can browse the adult tables while the little ones make something to take home. The whole thing is free and open to the public. And since it is the library, you can also grab a library card while you are there, check out the latest arrivals, and say hi to the reference staff who keep this place running for the whole community.

From Rydal, the library is a straight shot down Old York Road, about a six-minute drive. There is plenty of parking in the library lot and on adjacent streets. Come with an open mind and leave with a stack of signed books from authors who live right in your zip code.

🎬 Vlog direction: Slow gliding shot through the library's community room on Sunday morning, tables stacked with books organized by category — a row of fiction with colorful spines, a section of cookbooks with food photography covers, a children's corner with picture books spread out for little hands — and a separate table of houseplants and garden perennials with little handwritten price tags, shoppers with canvas totes filling up as warm morning light streams through the windows. 02 Friends Fall Book and Plant Sale — Sunday at the Library

The historic Abington Free Library on a bright late-summer morning, with mature oak trees, people on the front steps with canvas bags, and golden sunlight

If Saturday's Author Expo leaves you wanting more, the library has you covered the very next day. On Sunday, September 27, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the Friends of the Abington Free Library host their Fall Book and Plant Sale in the community room at 1030 Old York Road.

This is the kind of sale that the regulars circle on their calendar. The Friends group spends months collecting donations, and by sale day the community room is filled floor-to-tabletop with books in every category you can imagine. Fiction sorted alphabetically by author. Cookbooks with photos that will make you hungry. Children's books for every age range. Gardening books, travel guides, history, biography, mysteries, science fiction — if it was printed, there is probably a copy on one of these tables. Hardcovers and paperbacks mix together, and the prices are the kind that make you grab three extra books just because you can.

New this year: the sale includes a plant section. Bring home a houseplant, a perennial for your garden, or a starter herb for your kitchen windowsill. The plant selection rotates through the year, and fall is a great time to pick up perennials that will come back next spring. All proceeds support the library's programming, so every dollar you spend goes right back into the community.

Bring cash and bring a sturdy bag — you will leave with more than you planned. The sale runs rain or shine, and with September being one of the best months of the year in Abington, you can make a morning of it: hit the book sale, grab lunch at one of the spots on Old York Road, and still have the whole afternoon ahead of you.

🎬 Vlog direction: Wide establishing shot of the Keswick Theatre marquee at dusk, the classic sign glowing neon against a deep navy sky, then cut inside to the historic red-and-gold interior as the audience settles into their seats, the stage lights warming up, then a live performance shot of UB40 on stage, the crowd swaying to the reggae groove, warm amber stage light washing over the room. 03 UB40 Live at the Keswick — Sunday Night in Glenside

After a weekend of browsing books and filling your shelves, cap it off with live music at one of the region's most beloved venues. On Sunday, September 27, at 7:00 PM, the legendary UB40 — the British reggae-pop band behind some of the most recognizable songs of the past four decades — plays the Keswick Theatre at 291 N Keswick Avenue in Glenside.

You know the songs even if you do not know the name. "Red Red Wine," that cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love," "Kingston Town," "Food for Thought," "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)." UB40 has been making music since 1978, and their blend of reggae, pop, and socially conscious lyrics has sold over 70 million records worldwide. Seeing them live at the Keswick — an intimate 1,300-seat theatre with some of the best acoustics in the Philadelphia suburbs — is a completely different experience from hearing them on the radio. The band fills the room with a warmth and groove that makes you forget you are sitting indoors.

The Keswick itself is part of the draw. Built in 1928 as a vaudeville house, it has been restored and renovated over the decades into one of the premier mid-sized performance venues in the country. The red and gold interior, the balcony seats that feel like they are suspended over the stage, the old-fashioned marquee that lights up the corner of Keswick Avenue and Glenside Avenue — it is the kind of place where the building feels like part of the show. And it is seven minutes from Rydal.

Tickets are available through the Keswick Theatre box office and Ticketmaster. Parking is available in the lot behind the theatre and on surrounding streets. If you can find a sitter and make a date night out of it, this is the weekend to do it — library events during the day, reggae legends at night, and the whole thing within a ten-minute drive of home.

Living here means never running out of things to do.

Saturday afternoon meeting local authors at the library and filling a tote bag with signed books. Sunday morning browsing the book and plant sale for that perfect cookbook and a new houseplant. Sunday night watching a legendary reggae band in a historic theatre built in 1928. This is what the last weekend of September looks like when you live in Rydal and Abington Township.
