A Back-to-School Picnic at Rydal Elementary, Beatles vs. Stones at the Keswick, and Seven Blocks of Art in Jenkintown: Your September Guide for Rydal

By Craig Lerch · 3 min read

Think Rydal quiets down once September rolls around? Not even close. This month the neighborhood throws open its doors again. Friday evening, September 18, families will be spreading picnic blankets on the lawn at Rydal Elementary for the back-to-school picnic. A few days earlier, the historic Keswick Theatre lights up its marquee for a Beatles vs. Stones musical showdown. And to close out the month, the Jenkintown Festival of the Arts turns the town square into seven blocks of open-air art. Let us run through all three.

September is that sweet stretch in Rydal and Abington Township when the evenings stay golden and the calendar gets full again. Whether you have been here for years or you are a family weighing whether to call this area home, these three make a strong case. They are free or low-cost, all within a few minutes of Rydal, and all built around neighbors actually showing up. Here is the rundown.

🎬 Vlog direction: Hand-held walking shot up the sidewalk toward Rydal Elementary on a Friday late afternoon, picnic blankets spread across the green lawn, folding tables of snacks, kids running the length of the grass, the red-brick schoolhouse glowing in golden-hour light, parents laughing over paper plates, that warm end-of-week energy. 01 Rydal Back-to-School Picnic: Friday, September 18

Start with the one that is literally in the village. The Rydal Back-to-School Picnic runs Friday, September 18, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on the lawn at Rydal Elementary School, with a rain date of September 25. It is hosted by the PTO and the school community, but you do not need a kid enrolled to feel at home. Neighbors, new families, and longtime Rydal residents all gather on the grass as the school year gets rolling.

This is the classic golden-hour scene: blankets spread under the oaks, snacking, kids wearing off the first-week-of-school energy, parents catching up on the long summer. It is free, it is family-friendly, and it is the easiest way to put faces to the names you see on the walk to the train station. If you are new to the neighborhood or just scouting it as a potential home, show up, say hello, and watch how quickly a school lawn becomes a community.

Then keep the weekend going, because the same patch of late September has even more on the calendar. Bring a blanket, bring the kids, and let the picnic be your welcome mat.

🎬 Vlog direction: Hand-held tracking shot along Easton Road in Glenside on a Thursday night, the Keswick marquee glowing up ahead, couples strolling beneath the canopy, the low buzz of a big crowd, warm light washing over the historic brick, a quick push-in on the marquee before you head through the doors. 02 Beatles vs. Stones at the Keswick: Thursday, September 10

For a proper night out, point yourself at the Keswick Theatre. On Thursday, September 10, the historic Glenside stage hosts Beatles vs. Stones: The Musical Showdown, a tribute battle that lets the band and the crowd take sides between two of the greatest catalogs in rock. It is a low-stakes, high-energy way to spend a September evening without leaving the neighborhood.

The Keswick is the crown jewel of Glenside, a restored 1920s movie palace at 291 N. Keswick Avenue with a marquee that lights up Easton Road. From Rydal it is a five-minute drive, and the theater is right by the Glenside Regional Rail Station if you would rather ride in. With a beatles-vs-stones lineup it is the kind of show where the whole room ends up singing along by the second act.

Tickets do sell ahead of big tribute nights, so grab them on the Keswick website if this one calls to you. It is live music steps from Rydal, and proof that the neighborhood does not slow down when school starts.

🎬 Vlog direction: Hand-held pan across the Jenkintown Town Square on a Sunday afternoon, rows of white artist tents stretching down the tree-lined street, easels, pottery, and paintings mid-browse, a band playing on the main stage, kids darting between booths, warm late-afternoon sun throwing long shadows, a neighbor stopping to admire a canvas. 03 Jenkintown Festival of the Arts: Sunday, September 27

Close out September with the biggest arts day of the fall. The Jenkintown Festival of the Arts returns for its 26th annual edition on Sunday, September 27, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at Jenkintown’s Town Square on Greenwood Avenue, presented by the Jenkintown Community Alliance. It is the area’s classic open-air gallery, and it fills the square with artists, merchants, food vendors, and a live music stage.

Expect tents of paintings, ceramics, photography, jewelry, and crafts from regional artists, local food to snack on while you browse, and bands playing through the afternoon. The whole square becomes one big, walkable gallery, with tree-lined streets and families out in the warm September sun. From Rydal it is a short drive down Rydal Road into Jenkintown, so it is an easy way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

It is free to wander, and it is a fantastic way to show the kids that this area is about more than quiet streets and good schools. Grab an iced coffee, walk the rows, and maybe come home with a piece of local art you will remember the season by.

Living here means never running out of things to do.

A Friday picnic on the Rydal Elementary lawn. A Thursday night of Beatles versus Stones under the Keswick marquee. A whole Sunday wandering seven blocks of art in the Jenkintown square. One back-to-school tradition, one live-music night, and one big community festival, all of it minutes from your front door. That is what life in Rydal and Abington Township looks like, and it carries right through the fall.
