October is when Abington Township’s budget season gets underway, and two Board of Commissioners meetings this month give Rydal-Meadowbrook residents a head start on the numbers that will shape taxes, trash, and township services next year. Here is what to watch and how to weigh in.
The Board of Commissioners meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM in the Board Room at the Township Building, 1176 Old York Road, Abington. That puts Thursday, October 8 and Thursday, October 22 on the calendar. Agendas are posted at abingtonpa.gov ahead of each meeting, and public comment gives neighbors a chance to speak before votes are taken.
In recent years the township has introduced the preliminary budget at a special October meeting, advertised the millage ordinance in November, and adopted the final budget in December. Last year’s FY 2026 cycle ended with the township’s first property tax increase in three years: 0.25 mills, plus a $125 increase in the annual trash and recycling fee. For a home assessed at $165,000, the millage increase added roughly $41.25 per year, and the trash fee reflected sharply rising hauling costs.
The largest budget lines are police, public works, parks and recreation, and the library, the places where priorities like roads, leaf collection, and the Meadowbrook Bird Sanctuary become concrete.
The FY 2027 preliminary budget has not been published yet, but October is when the public first sees the township’s proposed numbers. Final and proposed budget documents are posted on the township website, and agendas appear on the township calendar ahead of each meeting. Neighbors plan to be in the room for both October meetings.
One reminder: the township’s $350,000 Hurricane Ida grant modification hearing happens Wednesday, September 30 at 10:00 AM. If you missed the details, we covered them last week.
This neighborhood hub has monitored township happenings for decades, and staying involved keeps that work going, with the full newsletter and an early look at issues headed to the Board.
There is no fee to follow along — staying informed and showing up at meetings is how neighbors make a difference.
Get involved today and help make sure Rydal-Meadowbrook has a voice in next year’s budget.
