The Meadowbrook Bird Sanctuary — a one-acre nature preserve that the RMCA transformed from a neglected dumping ground into a thriving habitat — hosted its summer trail walk on July 12. Board member and nature enthusiast led a group of 25 residents through the sanctuary's winding paths.
Participants spotted 14 bird species during the two-hour walk, including wood thrush, eastern towhee, and scarlet tanager — all native to the Mid-Atlantic region. The group also observed the ongoing native plant restoration, which has introduced over 200 native wildflower and shrub species to the sanctuary since 2020.
Native Plant Restoration
The native plant restoration effort is one of the RMCA's most impactful projects. By replacing invasive species with native plants, the sanctuary now provides year-round food and shelter for songbirds, pollinators, and small mammals. This summer, the team added milkweed, goldenrod, and native ferns to the understory.
If you'd like to volunteer for fall maintenance or help with the next planting phase, contact the RMCA. The sanctuary is open to the public dawn to dusk.
