The Valley Road bike lane project — a long-advocated RMCA initiative to improve cycling infrastructure in Abington Township — is now in Phase 2 construction. Paving is underway between Huntingdon Pike and Park Avenue, with completion expected by late summer 2026.
Project Progress
Phase 1, which included survey work, utility relocation, and base preparation along the western segment, was completed in spring 2026. Phase 2 focuses on the paved bike lane surface, road markings, and signage between Huntingdon Pike and Park Avenue.
The project adds a dedicated 5-foot-wide buffered bike lane along Valley Road, connecting residential areas to existing trail networks and providing a safer alternative for cyclists commuting to local schools, parks, and transit stations.
Why This Matters
The RMCA has advocated for improved cycling infrastructure since 2018, citing safety concerns and growing demand for active transportation options. The Valley Road bike lane is a key link in Abington Township's broader trail network plan, connecting to the Pennypack Trail system and making it easier for residents to commute by bike.
